Doc & Talk : Vivre ensemble - Our Land, Our Freedom
The film tells the story of two extraordinary Kenyan women. The quest for truth is always a difficult journey. It took eight years for Meena Nanji and Zippy Kimundu to create this film and tell the personal stories of people who lived during the colonial era in Kenya. After the legendary freedom fighter, Dedan Kimathi, was hanged by the British colonial regime in 1957 for leading Kenya's independence struggle in the 1950s, the authorities secretly disposed of his body. Today, his daughter, Wanjugu, joins her mother's decades-long quest to find his remains. During her journey, she meets former freedom fighters and land rights defenders who tell her about British concentration camps, torture, famine, and land theft that left hundreds of thousands of Kenyans destitute. Wanjugu's mission gains momentum, and working closely with her mother, she becomes a powerful leader, denouncing colonial crimes while creating a popular movement for land resettlement. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the two directors. The discussion will be simultaneously translated into French. Everyone can ask questions in the language they prefer.
