The expression of pure joy and overwhelming sadness constitutes the cornerstones of this program combining strings, winds, and piano. The first characterizes the Sextet of Francis Poulenc, often playful and virtuosic, while the latter painfully pervades the Quintet of Louis Vierne, composed in memory of his young son who died in combat. These two works by French composers will be separated by the serial writing experiment that is Igor Stravinsky's Septet.
