Burn away the winter! On the first Sunday after carnival, the Buergen (torches) are lit across the Grand Duchy to chase away winter. This traditional festival gathers crowds every year in all the communities of the country, as neighbors, local personalities, and associations gather around a glass of Glühwein in front of the bonfire. Goodbye winter! Each village has its own, sometimes larger, sometimes smaller. The Buergen, which are lit on the high grounds of the country the first Sunday after carnival, the Buergsonndeg, or torch Sunday, are huge bonfires with the mission to chase away winter. Their shape can vary – sometimes it's a small castle, but for most, they have the form of a giant bonfire with a cross in the middle.
