In 1939, the SS special camp of Hinzert near Trier in Germany was created as a police disciplinary camp. On July 1, 1940, it became a concentration camp. Tens of thousands of political prisoners from different countries were incarcerated in Hinzert, including about 1,500 Luxembourgers. They had to perform hard forced labor and endure brutal interrogations. Over 300 deaths are documented, but the number of unidentified cases is much higher. Among them are three major assassination campaigns, including the executions of 44 Luxembourg resisters in early September 1942 and on February 25, 1944.
In total, about 80 Luxembourgers died in Hinzert.
