A triptych of vignettes interwoven in an imaginary place evoking both Tehran and Winnipeg. Negin and Nazgol, two schoolchildren, find money frozen in the winter ice; Massoud, a tour guide, leads a bewildered group of tourists among Winnipeg's monuments; Matthew leaves his government job to visit his mother. Filled with nods to the Iranian New Wave as well as the tradition of absurd comedy, A Universal Language offers a whimsical satire full of wit, deadpan lyricism, and formal rigor to examine themes of connectivity and the universal need for recognition.
