Recently arrived as a doctor at the psychiatric hospital in Blida, Algeria, Frantz Fanon immediately proposed unprecedented methods, inspired by humanistic values that his colleagues openly questioned. Despite critiques and hesitations, he continued his work and was soon noticed by the FLN, which invited him to join the movement. As tensions between the French army and the FLN heightened, Fanon found himself caught between two sides and joined the fight for Algeria's independence.
For this third feature film, Jean-Claude Barny delves into the life, writings, and struggles of the psychiatrist and essayist Frantz Fanon, focusing on the period he spent in Algeria from 1953 to 1956, where his foundational thoughts on the violence of colonialism took root. An immersive biopic with sadly current resonances.
