Many operas, instrumental or vocal pieces are based on the myths of Antiquity. Baroque France is no exception to the rule, quite the contrary: the composers of the Court of Versailles bring these legendary characters back to life. The diversity and depth of the psychological profiles of these heroines and heroes, as well as the internal conflicts they experience, are captivating themes for the high society of salons. The exceptional destinies of the characters provide composers with the perfect ingredients to vary their palette of affects and expression: love, anger, tenderness, despair... A more intimate counterpart to lyric tragedy, the cantata focuses on a single destiny or mythological episode. Thus, in 1708, composer André Campra published the cantata "Arion" for soprano, German flute, and continuo, in which he depicts the eponymous Greek poet and musician, half-historical, half-legendary. In his cantata "Ariadne and Bacchus" published in 1728, Montéclair, one of the masters of the genre, depicts an offended, desperate, and finally consoled Ariadne by a new love. Far from being limited to vocal music, the program pays tribute to instrumental music by great masters of the time who compose inspired by myths like the famous François Couperin. Passions and emotions guaranteed.
