Industry Days: Trigger Warnings Conference
In the era of #MeToo, cinema has become the center of numerous controversies. However, feminists are not the only ones expressing concerns; anti-racist activists, for example, do so as well. How should we approach films, directors, and actors subject to criticism? How can we avoid the dilemma of either banning films and artists or ignoring societal issues in cinema, as if it exists outside of society? Are trigger warnings the solution, or do they simply push viewers away with their objections? While they may be necessary to protect the public from traumatic exposure, they cannot address all issues. A possible solution lies in contextualization rather than decontextualization. Films never exist in isolation. Industry professionals always shape the discourse around the works they present. Today, this discourse cannot ignore societal debates and controversies without excluding part of the audience.
