The doorman of the Grand Hotel Atlantic is an important and universally admired man, as evidenced by the magnificent livery he wears. One day, however, the hotel manager decides that the old doorman has outlived his usefulness and informs him that the time has come for him to step aside. He strips him of the livery that is his entire raison d'être and relegates him to cleaning the toilets. Dejected and humiliated, the poor man returns that same evening to secretly steal the garment.
