In Greece, a unique music, rembetiko, was created in hashish dens and prisons. The songs talk about love, suffering, prison, and drugs. Rembetiko is the music of the Greek underground. In the port districts, refugees from Asia Minor sang of their alienation; among the hashish-smoking singers and pomaded pimps, this music formed its own subculture.
