This extraordinary play tells the story of the career of a young stage artist, starting at the time of Austria's annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938. Lola Blau goes into exile in America via Switzerland, becomes famous, loses her illusions, and returns to Vienna after the war. Since its premiere in 1971, the play has not lost its relevance. The cabaret songs of the great composer, singer, and poet Georg Kreisler (1922-2011) range from virtuoso comedy to touching tragedy. "Lola Blau" is the story of powerlessness. Lola is as helpless against anti-Semitism as she is against her own Judaism. She is powerless against the stubborn Swiss, rages powerlessly against the sex career in America, and finally, is powerless again against Austria's die-hard conservatives. She just wants to sing and dance a little, but has to realize that it's not enough to want a small place in the sun. Everyone must try to remove the obstacles blocking the sun for themselves and others.

Georg Kreisler set standards for literary cabaret. His songs are biting, quirky, and political. They disturb, seduce, and rouse. He despised labels, as he wrote in his autobiography. "Hopefully not," he adds. Günther Rohles, Deutschlandfunk
