The 5 Skandhas and Non-Self
Teaching and zazen morning "The five skandhas and non-self", with monk Peter Horiki Hollerith.
Theme:
In original Buddhism, the skandhas were primarily used to verify whether there is truly a self existing somewhere within our body-mind. The 5 skandhas or aggregates represent various places where a practitioner might find - but cannot find - a permanent self. It is only through attachment to one or more of the 5 skandhas that a self/me is formed... and then disappears when the attachment is identified and abandoned through zazen.
In his teisho (teaching), monk Peter Horiki will address the following questions in more detail:
- What are the 5 skandhas/aggregates?
- How can they help us during zazen?
- Why do we have the deep conviction that there is a permanent self/me within us?
- How is the self/me born and how does it disappear?
The teacher:
Peter Horiki Hollerith has been practicing zazen since 1994 and was ordained as a monk in January 1999. In 2013, he received Dharma transmission (Shiho) from master Olivier Reigen Wang-Genh, abbot of the Ryumonji zen monastery. Since 2017, he is an authorized zen teacher (kyoshi) of the Japanese Soto zen school (Sotoshu).
