A musical fable

Book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee
Premiered on Broadway in 1959

Thanks to the French Institute of Luxembourg for their communication support.
Theater and opera director Laurent Pelly takes on, in a concert hall format, one of the great Broadway musicals, never before performed in France or Luxembourg: Gypsy, a musical fable about the heartbreaking fate of a mother consumed by her dream of fame. Created on Broadway in 1959, with a libretto by Arthur Laurents, Gypsy, inspired by the autobiographical novel by the famous stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, depicts Rose and her two daughters traveling the United States to present their vaudeville act. Jule Styne's remarkable score with jazzy overtones and Stephen Sondheim's bittersweet lyrics take us on a journey into the madness of this woman at a pivotal time when vaudeville became modern entertainment. The role of the mother is played by soprano Natalie Dessay.
