This solo performance by Betty Tchomanga revolves around the figure of Mami Wata (Mammy Water). She is a goddess of water, a figure from the depths of the night, imbued with power and sexuality. This stranded mermaid faces those who observe her. Mermaids are hybrid beings: often seen as hideous creatures, straddling two worlds. And this mermaid jumps. An ordinary, vertical jump. A single movement that persistently shakes her body up and down. From this repetitive motion emerges an infinite transformation of her body. She becomes a canvas on which images appear and disappear continuously. In Mascarades, the jump is a metaphor for desire, the pursuit of pleasure. A desire for the other, a desire for another, for what one doesn't have, for what one isn't. Jumping to resist. Jumping to become. Jumping to die. Jumping to exist.
