CHAiLD is a young singer who, through his soft and soothing voice, transports us to another world full of emotions and positive energy 🧚

Since he was a child, CHAiLD has given free rein to his creativity to write, compose, and sing the most beautiful songs 🎵. His song "Sick Water", has reached the national radio record for more than 11 consecutive weeks.

eLfy: tell us about your musical life, how did you get to this point? Why this style of music?

CHAiLD: I think it was quite organically, I've been singing for as long as I can remember. I started playing the piano when I was about 6-7 years old. At the age of 13, I started writing songs because I realised I had things to say and I was lazy to study a song for an exam. When I was 16, I started singing lessons, I did a lot of internships and masterclasses. At the age of 19, I started my first project which had a mediocre success and last year I launched CHAiLD.

eLfy: what did you learn between your first project and the "CHAiLD" project?

CHAiLD: a lot! Image, sound, that everything has to be coherent. I made the clips all by myself, so I do the directing, when we go on my Youtube channel, we see songs like "Artificial, Sick Water, Playground, Discontinuous" I build my sets by myself so I try to find the "cheapest" stuff, I think it developed my sense of negotiation. And why Pop Music? For me it's the link, that's all I listen to.

eLfy: which singer do you listen to?

CHAiLD: I love Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande... Lady Gaga as an artist she is one of my idols because, like me, she goes from phase to phase and she likes exuberant things.

eLfy: with whom would you like to share the stage?

CHAiLD: Mahmood, an Italian singer, I listened to his album over and over again when I went to Liverpool this year.

eLfy: were you born here in Luxembourg?

CHAiLD: yes

eLfy: and what is your link with Liverpool?

CHAiLD: I went to study there this year, I wanted to get out of this bubble in Luxembourg and it gave me a lot of connections. Apart from that, I'd also like to share the stage with Lady Gaga or Sia. I don't think they're selfish persons, afterwards when you get to know the people in the business you can see that it's not at all what it seems to be, but I think these two artists are pretty transparent.

eLfy: how was the lockdown for you? Did you get out of it, or not yet?

CHAiLD: Yes we're out. The lockdown went very well, but at the beginning, it was very bad, I came for my show in March, perfect, but then I went back to Liverpool for 2 days with 2 underpants and 3 sweaters and had to stay there for 2 months...

eLfy: and when do you plan to leave again?

CHAiLD: no I'm not going back there, next year I'm going to go to Brussels, Liverpool it's over.

eLfy: do you study at the same time or do you devote 100% of your time to music?

CHAiLD: the goal is to devote 100% of my time to music. In Liverpool, I was doing it, so I studied music for a year there. However, I realised that I had to come back every 2 weeks because my project required to be there all the time and it was a bit stressful. The lockdown brought me a reset, the fact that I didn't have to do anything, I was completely in a state of burn-out around December. The lockdown allowed me to focus, to have a clearer vision of my future, to improve my mindset and as a result, it's the law of attraction, I think better, I'm more positive and there are a lot of good things happening.

There's the concert that has been postponed in October, and a lot of other one, a lot of festivals that have been cancelled, but then I think we're going to get new concerts, I can't complain, I see my parents who are merchants and nothing is happening... Luckily, I still manage to work here from home.

eLfy: are you living from music or not?

CHAiLD: not yet but I fully intend to start next year or two years from now.

eLfy: what's your favorite concert hall?

CHAiLD: Kulturfabrik, that's where I did my very first concert, that's why I like it so much. The ex-owner is a person who helped me a lot.

eLfy: I think there's more and more professionalism in this sector, there are more and more young people with technology who manage to be pro. Before, we needed a big studio, but now we can almost do everything pro directly from home.

CHAiLD: I started on my own, but I had the chance to meet people through contests and now I'm here with a great team.

eLfy: do you have any permanent musicians playing with you?

CHAiLD: yes, my drummer from the beginning. His band was quite famous in Luxembourg but they split up and I came to him and I said: "play for me and I promise you that in two years, or a little bit more, it will be fine".And there's my manager who also plays with me on stage, I have a very close relationship with him, he plays a little bit every aspect of my life, when I'm in bad shape I'm at his place, when I have nervous breakdowns or things are going too fast, he helps me to get back on my feet.

eLfy: isn't it difficult to keep your feet on the ground and keep humility?

CHAiLD: the lesson I learned is that when you think you've succeeded, you get a slap in the face and it works every time.  

eLfy: this is the principle of entrepreneurship.

CHAiLD: every time you think you're at one point, you're not. It's the beginning of your career, there's a lot going on. I think that's because I came from a background where few people believed in me, I didn't have the same look as now, I didn't have the same image... I don't know who I was.

This perfectionism that I had, to do everything by myself...now I have to learn that there are people around to work and it's hard because when you connect the work and you see that they don't necessarily do it the way you wanted to do it, you get very frustrated, and frustration makes you toxic and that's my biggest lesson of 2020.

eLfy: and why are you called CHAiLD? do they even call you CHAiLD at home?

CHAiLD: no, at home and with my family, it's Adriano. I started my career with Adriano but it didn't work out, it was at the beginning before I came out. In fact, there are 2 versions, the official version, and the unofficial version. 

eLfy: it was a name that was available, nobody had taken it?

CHAiLD: yes, no one has taken this brand apart from a Korean band on Spotify. Well, CHAiLD is completely different from Adriano. Adriano is very neurotic and manic, CHAiLD is a person who has no fears, who lives his extravagance and when I'm on stage I turn into CHAiLD. So this schizophrenia helped me mix the two personalities. Adriano became CHAiLD and CHAiLD became Adriano.

eLfy: when will you be on stage again?

CHAiLD: in September in Hamburg.

eLfy: and here in Luxembourg?

CHAiLD: in August, we have a small concert, we're going to do the first part of a movie but then I'll have my real concert in October with Maz.

eLfy: shall we move on to your second song?

CHAiLD: yes, the last song I'm going to present is an Italian song.

eLfy: are you Italian?

CHAiLD: my mother is Italian and my father is Portuguese.

eLfy: which song gives you the good mood?

CHAiLD: 'Hunger', Florence and the machine.

eLfy: do you have a special lockdown song, the one you've listened to the most in the last two months?

CHAiLD: ok I'll change my mind, the song that gives me the good mood is "Woman like me" by Little Mix and my special lockdown song is 'Hunger' by Florence and the machine and 'People, I've been sad' by Christine and the Queens.

eLfy: your favorite meal: breakfast, lunch or dinner?

CHAiLD: dinner. 

eLfy: what about your favorite dish? 

CHAiLD: I live for pizza, my mother makes it, baked pasta too, so during the lockdown I just enjoyed of it. The 'cordon bleu' too.

eLfy: your favorite restaurant?

CHAiLD: Onesto, an Italian restaurant.

eLfy: the bar you love to hang out at?

CHAiLD: it depends if I go to downtown with my friends or with my boyfriend, I don't have a favorite bar in Luxembourg.

eLfy: let's test this brunch?

CHAiLD: yes because I'm hungry, I can't stop looking at the table. Mamacita is also one of my favorite restaurants.

eLfy: have you composed anything lately?

CHAiLD: yes, I released a song two weeks ago, I recorded it the day just before the lockdown, we mixed and arranged it on Zoom, I shot the video at home with my parents and my boyfriend edited it in Lisbon.

eLfy: there are a lot of people watching or listening to your music?

CHAiLD: more people are listening. It's difficult for me to get views in Luxembourg because people don't necessarily share a lot, but, I have a very strong fan-base in terms of mass and activity. I have a lot of fans abroad because I do a lot of opening acts. We write to each other all the time on Instagram.

eLfy: do you directly answer the messages?

CHAiLD: yes, all the time. Who am I to not answer them? 

eLfy: is there a nice relationship with your fans?

CHAiLD: yes, there are fans who make 7-hour trips to come to my shows. During the lockdown, I also created a website where fans can help me financially, because, due to the situation I lost a lot of money, and there are so many people who donated money. In the gay community, they don't always have the courage to come out of the closet, and when they see me, they find some courage, to think that you can be cool and gay. Because when you're a musician, people are mean. 

eLfy: was it a source of inspiration on a social level too?

CHAiLD: yes, especially in Luxembourg, it's not represented at all. Edsun and I are the only two gay artists. And I think it's important for these high school students who are watching us, who admire me and who come to my concerts, and that they don't fear that everyone will attack them when they come out. For me, it wasn't easy for my family either, but they accepted it and that's the important thing.
