The ensemble was born in 2019 from the enthusiasm and passion of its singers for Gregorian chant. The ensemble aims to bring the ancient musical tradition to life in its natural setting, the liturgy, during the Gregorian masses on Friday evenings at the Saint Roch church in Paris. Lux Cantus is also dedicated to sharing the beauty of Gregorian chant on stage during concerts and festivals. It emphasizes the musicality and authenticity of the ancient repertoire, drawing more on medieval sources, traditional melodies and ancient and modern polyphonies.
Olga Roudakova, choirmaster and medieval musicologist, graduated from the CNSM of Novosibirsk (Russia), the CNSMD of Paris and the École des Hautes Études en Sorbonne, directed the Gregorian Choir of Paris-Voix de femmes for 20 years. Currently a lecturer in Interpretation of Medieval Plainsong at the Sorbonne-Université, she is passionate about the interpretation of medieval music but more particularly about the research, study, history and semiology of Gregorian chant.
The “Voices of the Prophets” program is an attempt to perceive the world as a divine project. God calls the prophet and entrusts him with a message. We must be able to hear it and understand it: not only as a prediction of the future, but also as a teaching. Our ambition is to bring the listener, through Gregorian chant, to love these voices of prophets, to nourish his mind and heart with them, to relive anew the fulfillment of his prophecies.
