With these new works, Luc Doerflinger protests against the weight of the prevailing order which denies the image's capacity to be what it has been since the dawn of humanity: an appeal made to the human spirit to think beyond its limits. The image, the painting, remains a matter of putting our gaze and our ability to see beyond the visible that which makes presence under tension. Works that question what still makes a painting. Luc Doerflinger deploys an incredible breadth of means, playing on formats, the tension between background and figure, the possibility for a glaze or a pictorial gesture to reveal the unthought of a form or a line. Works dialoguing with both the present and the history of painting. We encounter Bonnard (whose photograph serves as a model), Luc Tuymans, the abstract/geometric painting of the 1960s in the USA, and a vast corpus of things seen from ethnographic documents to artefacts of popular culture. Luc Doerflinger offers a striking journey where the visitor must get lost in the labyrinth of visual events that all open onto a radical questioning of our conception of reality and, by extension, what otherness is.
