Stahltier. An Exorcism
Albert Ostermaier / Frank Hoffmann
Revival of 1935. A screening room in the Ministry of Propaganda of the Reich. The cinema is empty except for two people: Leni Riefenstahl and Joseph Goebbels, the Minister of Propaganda and the undisputed master of the Reich's film industry. Goebbels and Riefenstahl have come together to watch Willy Otto Zielke's "Das Stahltier," an industrial film commissioned for the 100th anniversary of the Reichsbahn, a dark, expressionist-avant-garde masterpiece. Goebbels had banned it, but now he wants to watch it with Riefenstahl.
As the film runs, a real drama unfolds between them, a close-up into the psyche and psychoses of power, an intimate dance and fight, two predators circling each other. Riefenstahl makes a pact with the devil, who dictates the price: he wants to make a film with her, with only two actors, her and him...
"Stahltier. An Exorcism" is a commissioned work by director Frank Hoffmann from the significant German playwright Albert Ostermaier. This play was written for two very special actors: Jacqueline Macaulay and Wolfram Koch. A crucial play, an explosive theme, a high-caliber cast. Following the great success at the TNL and the Renaissance Theater in Berlin, the play is being revived this season.
With historical film clips and live videos, but most importantly with the actors' impressive depth, Frank Hoffmann delivers a sovereign, touching performance.
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: "Stahltier. Ein Exorzismus" simply captivates. (...) It feels like being in the midst. One of the most remarkable productions of the current season.
Luxemburger Wort: A strong evening.
