Study day Corinne Schneider: “The music of travel”
Travel is at the heart of musical life.
Some Western musicians of the 19th and 20th centuries were even real globetrotters: Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Franz Liszt, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Camille Saint-Saëns, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Philip Glass… If painters and traveling writers draw and tell their discoveries, their encounters, their impressions of the world, what about musicians? On the lookout for new sound sources, instruments or different musical expressions, they also take notes… of music. It is these travel journals, these “phonoramas” that Corinne Schneider invites us to leaf through and question, like so many sound albums. What interested Western composers in their travels across the five continents? How did they treat these sources? What did they do with them? Beyond exoticism, in what ways does the discovery of the immensity of possibilities and otherness reflect in the composition? This investigation, which poses questions related to the treatment of sound sources, is part of the general field of the history of cultural transfers.
