This extraordinary play tells the career of a young stage artist, starting during the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany in 1938. Lola Blau goes into exile to America via Switzerland, becomes famous, loses her illusions, and returns to Vienna after the war. Since its premiere in 1971, the play has not lost its relevance. The cabaret songs of the great composer, singer, and poet Georg Kreisler (1922-2011), range from virtuoso comedy to touching tragedy. "Lola Blau" is the story of powerlessness. Lola faces antisemitism as helplessly as her own Judaism. She is powerless against stubborn Swiss, rages powerlessly against the sex-career in America, and in the end, she is again powerless against the Austrian die-hards. She simply wants to dance, sing a little, and bring joy to her audience. But she has to realize that it is pointless to just want a small spot in the sun. Everyone must try to remove the obstacles that hide the sun for themselves and their fellow human beings.
