During her residency, Dee Meaden is writing the first version of her psychological horror film "WOMEN AND CHILDREN." The film explores the idealized or sanitized notions that define mothers as nurturing and children as charming, gentle, and innocent. It seeks to explore how we dehumanize those who deviate from our restrictive notions of what they should be and how societal expectations make us perform and dissociate from our true selves.
The story follows a mother who fears there is something inherently sinister about her withdrawn teenager, but ends up realizing that it is she who is capable of great brutality—freeing herself from the restrictive idea of what they both should be.
As part of the development process, Dee works in collaboration with her partner Ollie Verschoyle, a cinematographer, to create images that evoke the world, tone, or characters of the project. Ollie will be present during the last part of the residency.
