Youth (Hard Times) (LuxFilmFest)
The individual and collective stories unfold in the textile workshops of Zhili, becoming more serious as the seasons pass. Fu Yun accumulates mistakes and endures mockery from his peers. Xu Wanxiang cannot find his pay slip; his boss refuses to pay his salary. Hu Siwen recounts the 2011 riots in Zhili: police violence, confinement, and fear. After tough negotiations, the workers return home to celebrate the New Year. Following a first part shown at Luxfilmfest in 2024, along with a masterclass by Wang Bing, the Chinese documentarian continues his trilogy entitled Youth, a dive into the daily life of young workers toiling in textile factories. He never shies away from showing the harsh conditions in these forgotten places.
