The Surrealist Revolution, Yesterday and Today
Did surrealism die with André Breton on September 28, 1966? Nothing is less certain. One thing is sure, however: surrealism was born with André Breton. And it lived with him throughout his life. It is said to be a hundred years old, recalling that the Manifesto of Surrealism, the first of its name, was written in 1924. Before that, there was Les Champs Magnétiques where Breton and Soupault experimented with automatic writing. And even before, Apollinaire invented the name. And there was Dada. And Lautréamont. And Rimbaud. Not to mention Freud and his dreams, Marx and the revolution. All of this weaves together when the surrealist revolution begins. It is therefore much more than a hundred years old. And it has spread beyond France. What were its fortunes and misfortunes elsewhere in Europe and in the world? With visual and audio documents, Jean Portante traces the history of the longest literary and artistic movement of the 20th century. Not forgetting to ask what remains of it today.
