The subsoil: Geological reconnaissance at different scales
The subsurface is, by nature, largely invisible, and yet modern man needs to know how it is formed and what processes take place there. Using concrete and mostly local examples, the lecture explains how the geologist obtains information about the subsurface, either from what is visible on the surface, directly by digging into the Earth, or by using indirect geophysical methods, and how this very varied information is then compiled in the form of maps, sections and three-dimensional models of the Earth, in order to obtain a global image of the subsurface.
